Chris Perez - Radical Speech Outline

Radical Idea: Government Match System
Every man woman and child needs someone to love.
Each and every one of us could have one partner especially for ourselves for our entire lives.
There for us to confide in. There for us when we need them. There for us always and forever.
As things are now in America, most of us will never have a partner like this and will be forced by current American culture to live out lonely pathetic lives until we die.
They say heart disease is the number one killer of American Adults. This is a fact, but a wise man once said “don’t pity the dead, pity the living” because It is also true that millions more face something far worse than death and that is loneliness. Only 3 out of ten American adults can say that they have a reliable confidant. That they have someone to talk to about their problems. That they have someone who actually gives a damn. 3 out of 10. That means 70 percent of Americans can’t even talk about their problems with someone they trust.
this is a very serious problem and we as a country need to take it very seriously because our problems don’t end there, no not even a little bit.
Homelessness, Death, Depression, Mental instability, deadly diseases, MURDER, Suicide, Racism, bigotry, economic disparity, homosexuality and even heart disease all stem from the loneliness experienced by Americans. Every single one of us, even those of us who believe we are happily married or have found our soulmate, are dead wrong.
There are too many people out there and when you end up with the wrong partner, you will be subjected to a life of loneliness. She may be your wife, but she wants your neighbor. He may be your husband, but he lusts for something prettier and younger. Your daughter will go out alone with any dangerous man that talks pretty to her and could be raped and murdered just for the innocent act of looking for someone to love.
Your son could go out dreaming of love and a partner for life and come home alone, but his hands will not be empty. He will pick up arms and his depression will cause the mental instability that is killing our youth and causing chaos in our cities.
Your family is likely not rich and they will never be rich because the rich keep to their own. They will inbreed and intermarry to keep their empires to themselves causing the gap between classes that grows every day.
But all of this can be fixed by one simple remedy. Love. That’s right Love and Jesus
Somewhere out there is a woman or man created by God, our lord and savior, just for you.
So who are we as Americans, citizens of the greatest country in the entire world, THE WORLD to deny the lord’s plan for us by picking and choosing partner after hopeless uncaring disgusting partner endlessly looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right who never comes around until it is too late.
You will NEVER find this person. NEVER, there are too many people and too many variables for us common people to count. We have work to do, we have school, we have everything, there is no time to waste, there is no money to waste, so why should be bother?
We Shouldn’t Not when there are thousands of people out there who can work it all out for us. Just imagine. When we are only children we are presented with a partner. A partner scientifically found to be the perfect genetic match for us. With the things we know now about human development, you can believe that scientists and researchers can do this and when they do, everyone will be happy.
No person would be homeless, because there would always be someone supporting our efforts and we will never lose hope or ambition.
Depression will be nothing but a tale of the past as no man or woman could become depressed growing with their soulmate.
Mental Instability is a product of our own loneliness and flawed social customs, if every man woman and child had their perfect partner for stabilization mental health problems would be a thing of the past.
Genetic diseases passed down that literally kill thousands of people every year will be terminated completely. We can pair the infected with the infected and sterilize them to prevent spreading of the disease. With the right scientific matching techniques we can maintain the genetic variation in the gene pool and still cut out the few poisoning the many with their deadly genes.
Murder and suicide would nearly disappear as the only people liable to kill anyone or themselves will be those of us that lose our partners at some time to a horrible accident, but we have a solution to that to. Assisted suicide for those of us that have lost our other half will be free of charge and immediate.
Racists, bigots and homosexuals that find it in themselves to break the status quo and newfound peace and happiness in love, will be a thing of the past as those inclined to become extremists like we know them today will be paired well enough to stop those dormant behaviors to come out.
All we need is love people. John Lennon, Mahatma Gandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Martin Luther, Aristotle, Plato, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Ronald Reagan would uphold this newfound loving and prosperous America and so should you.
Everything can be fixed with love, so please join the American party for love and peace and ensure a better tomorrow for America and the World.
Thank you very much and god bless the United States of America

Post-Speech Reflection #2: Speech Genre

 Speech Genre: Meeting The Parents
Video vvv
Rhetorical Context: You (man) speaking to parents of partner in order to strengthen relationship

Start

·         Asking solid rhetorical questions
o   This could be a solid move for engaging the audience in deeper thinking or putting them in the situation that I am talking about.
·         Relate the material to personal experience
o   Taka did a great job of doing this in his presentation and won over a lot of Ethos and Pathos from his audience.
·         Giving a more solid overview of what we are going to explore
o   Nick Laquay did this. I appreciate the casual way I went through the information, but a quick and entertaining glimpse of what is to come could gain even more interest from the audience.
·         Actually memorize the statistics and all the information on the slides of the Prezi
o    So that I do not have to even look at the monitor or screen to make meaningful statements.
·         Time the amount of time I want to stay on each slide
o   I spoke to Daniel after class and he mentioned that this is something that he incorporated into the presentation. It is somewhat limiting in that it forces you to stay with the timing you established, but it helps you stay on time which I need to improve on.
·         Using a literal timer
o   To monitor the amount of time I am spending so that I do not have to ask how much time I have.

Stop

·         I paused during my presentation briefly
o   To point out that I forgot to record and thanked Linda for recording for me. I had told her previously that I wanted her to record this for me, but I meant to give her my phone so that she would not have to email it to me from hers.
·         Occasionally making a sound with my tongue
o   It seems like I was sticking my tongue to the roof of my mouth, creating suction, then pulling off quickly to make a sort of connecting sound between statements. I stopped using the words like and um, but incorporated this weird new thing.
·         Saying um.
o   I said it once in the first 2 minutes and then… later said “um, you know.” They don’t know, that is why I am giving this presentation. Saying you know and um just wasted valuable time that I could have used later in the presentation.
·         Mispronunciation and using incorrect tenses on some words
o   For example around the beginning I said: “you’re intended audiences are the parents.” This is clearly poor use of tenses and doesn’t make grammatical sense.
o   This happened again at 1:42 when I said: “we’re gonna talk about what the man can do to get closer to their in-laws and get some good relationship.” Need to work on phrasing and structuring my sentences more clearly while on stage.
·         Making useless statements
o   Superfluous statements like “…your partner can do that because she knows the parents.” Obviously your partner knows his or her parents. That statement could have been rephrased. “…because they are her parents” is probably what I was going for.
·         Reverting to a somewhat monotonous tone
o   When rushed to finish the presentation during the last stretch, my tone of voice seemed to kind of flat-line as I rushed to get to the video clips and final message.

Continue

·         Using hand gestures effectively
o   I was a lot more diverse in my hand gestures this time around and even incorporated some claps to bring attention to myself before important statements. This was done effectively at 55 seconds into the video.
·         I like that I created a sort of persona for the audience during my speech
o   I assigned them the role of a Man meeting the parents of the Daughter or Son of the house with the intention of making the relationship more serious. I hope that this had the effect of winning the audience’s attention by involving them in the story.
·         Using strong eye contact and body language
o   I did not spend too much time looking at the monitors, but I would like to spend even less time on that. Also, I used a few solid gestures throughout: the clap, the pray and point, the rainbow, the high 5, the conductor, the bend knees to get low, and the no handlebars.
·         Speaking with confidence
o   Throughout the presentation, I felt and sounded very sure of myself. I had done adequate research on my topic and considered myself an expert a good amount of time ahead of class. As a result I felt comfortable discussing the material and delivered the information confidently.
·         Acting out the moves that I mention. The specific moves:
o   Plead the Fifth – I raised my hand with five fingers out and acted out the motions of nudging my partner
o   Firm handshake – described and acted out the handshake as well as described the effects of the move
o   The wine bottle – used physical comedy and witty language to make the move a joke and communicate the importance of preparing for the move ahead of time.
·         Using humor to deliver my point and make my statements understood.
o   The images and clips that I incorporated into the slides strengthened my humorous dialogue and body language. I also believe they played a significant role in winning the approval of my audience.
